DESCRIPTION: The Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) is sponsoring a two-day training course offered by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education. It is intended for physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, and other healthcare providers. The course focuses on the fundamentals of radiobiology along with the medical care and management of patients involved with radiological and/or nuclear incidents. Topics include radiation physics; radiation detection/measurement/identification; early evaluation and treatment of the acute radiation syndrome (ARS), cutaneous injuries, and contamination control; and mitigating risks to patients, providers, and facilities. The course emphasizes the practical aspects of initial hospital management of irradiated and/or contaminated patients through lectures and hands-on practical exercises. All these principles are incorporated in a hands-on exercise using a mock patient with injuries and transferable radioactive contamination.
ACCREDITATION: Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education (CME) for physicians. This live activity is designating 13 CME to those who complete the entire course.

COST: No fee for the course. Food is provided. Lodging and transportation are the responsibility of the participant.
